Pride Month

Every year, the Wesleyan community comes together to celebrate Pride Month in October with a variety of events, initatives, performances, and celebrations.  Please come out and support as many of the great events listed below as you are able!

Killing Joy as a Queer Project

  4. Event DescriptionRenowned feminist scholar Sara Ahmed’s many books include Complaint!, What's The Use? On the Uses of Use, Living a Feminist Life, Willful Subjects, On Being Included: Racism and Diversity in Institutional Life, The Promise of Happiness and Queer Phenomenology: Objects, Orientations, Others, all published by Duke University Press. Ahmed’s newly published The Feminist Killjoy Handbook (Seal Press), her first trade book, suggests that the feminist killjoy is a queer figure with a queer history. In this lecture, Ahmed explores the queerness of the project of killing joy as a project of redirecting negativity and explains how and why killing joy is a world making project. Transmutation: A Ceremony

  4. Event Description:  Join WesWell and The Resource Center for a screening of Transmutation: A Ceremony by Mirror Memoirs founder Amita Swadhin. Amita is an educator, storyteller, and activist dedicated to fighting interpersonal and institutional violence against young people. Mirror Memoirs is a storytelling and organizing project that uplifts the narratives, healing, and leadership of Two Spirit, transgender, intersex, non-binary, queer, and BIPOC survivors of child sexual abuse. Join Us! Beckham Hall 5pm on Thursday October 5th. Dinner provided.

Queer Speed Dating and Friending

  3. Event Organizers: City of Middletown’s LGBTQIA+ Commission, Middletown Pride, Relish 670 Bar and Cookhouse
  4. Event Description:  Come meet fellow queers and bet “boo-ed” up for the fall! All identities and expressions are welcomed to join in on the fun, friendship & Flirting. This event is open to ages 18+ and ID is required for entry. RSVP’s required. Click here to RSVP.

  4. Event Description:  All LGBTQ+ faculty, staff, students and their allies are invited to help us kick off the 2023  Pride Month with a communal dinner and conversation about being queer at Wesleyan and community building!

Bi/Pan Visibility with Crochet and Jewelry Making

  4. Event Description:  Come join The RC interns in a conversation about bisexuality and pansexuality visibility while making your very own crocheted item and/or earrings and bracelets.

Star Gay-zing

  2. Event Location/Zoom Information: Van Vleck Observatory
  3. Event Organizers: Wesleyan Astronomy Department and Wesleyan Women in Science
  4. Event Description:  Join the Wesleyan Astronomy Department and Wesleyan Women in Science for a "Star-Gayzing" public observing night. There will be multiple telescopes in operation for public sky viewing, snacks provided by Tony's Flour Shop (local queer-owned bakery), mini talks about LGBT topics in astronomy, a planetarium show queering the constellations, and other activities.

Queer Youth Open Mic at Downtown Trick or Treat

  1. Event Time and Date: Saturday, October 21st from 11:00am-2:00pm
  2. Event Location/Zoom Information: Union Green Gazebo
  3. Event Organizers: Q Plus and Middletown Pride
  4. Event Description:  Join Q Plus and Middletown Pride for a family-friendly Halloween themed open mic alongside Middletown Recreation's downtown trick or treat event! Follow the Halloween unicorns to the end of Main Street for a youth social, including pizza, games, crafts, and a live DJ. The open mic from 12-2 PM will be hosted by, and feature performances from, Middletown drag performers! Youth performers can contact Q Plus ahead of time to guarantee a performance slot; onsite signups will be accepted until we run out of space! Costumes encouraged but not required; audience members of all ages are welcome!

Queer Sex Education

  4. Event Description:  What types of barrier methods should two people with vulvas use? What do you do with a foreskin? Does liking _________ mean that I’m _________? Mainstream sex ed probably hasn’t answered the questions you have about having sex as a queer (or questioning) person, but that’s all going to change in this workshop. This workshop is open to people of all genders and sexual orientations. Dinner will be provided and there will be multiple chances to win prizes!

  4. Event Description: Come join the Resource Center's Gender and Sexuality Interns for our semesterly nail night.  We will have gel polish and manicure supplies available that are completely free and open to everyone!

Sex Health and Resources

  4. Event Description:  Join WesWell to ask all your questions about sex and sexual health, get unbiased, non-judgemental support and pick up safer sex supplies & other wellness giveaways. The Center for Key Populations will be here to provide HIV testing to those interested and there is a sex toy raffle for all visitors of the event!
